The Yarning Portal is a semi home-brewed Dungeons and Dragons campaign inspired by the official campaign named The Yawning Portal. The ‘Dungeon Master’ used their hobby of crocheting to create crochet characters, as well as crafting scenes and props, giving the campaign a unique and personal touch!
Initially, I was asked by the client to create portraits of each of the players’ personas to give to them as Christmas presents. I was given detailed descriptions of each character’s appearance and personality, as well as a photo of their crochet form, to give me an idea of what they would look like and I work from there!
Not long after the Christmas present portraits were completed, I was approached again by the client. Impressed with the art style, they asked if I would be willing to create illustrations for their website. The site would document the Dungeons and Dragons campaign as it progressed, so they needed an illustration to accompany each week’s instalment. Each visual would portray a scene from that week’s adventure and required the themes and hobbies of crocheting, haberdashery and traditional role-playing be implemented in some way.

Recently The Yarning Portal reached its 1 Year Anniversary and to celebrate, I created a piece of the role-playing team with the Dungeon Master’s mysterious pedlar character (which I created for the website illustrations) and a wee crochet doll of my in-game character (whom the Dungeon Master created and used in the game to involve me in the fun adventures)!
The campaign is still ongoing and you can follow the adventure over on The Yarning Portal!
