Last October (2021) I decided to create a weekly comic, rather than do a daily drawing challenge, like Inktober. The idea came about after my yearly watch of ‘Over The Garden Wall’, a limited, animated television series set at Hallowe’en. The show features an episode where there is a town occupied by pumpkin people.
This got me thinking… what would my partner and I be like as Pumpkin people?
Thus, the first comic was born!

I then started to think up daily scenarios that both people with pumpkin heads and regular folks, could relate to!

Although the characters were originally styled after myself and my partner, they started to take on a life of their own and have become more Original Characters, rather than Self Portraits. For my finale, I planned to create a comic with an animated element, telling a story of how their relationship sort of began. Unfortunately, I fell ill at the time and could not complete the project.
Months went by and I couldn’t stop thinking about how much I enjoyed working with these characters, and how desperately I wanted to finish the animated comic . For a while, I debated whether to wait until this October to continue the series, or to make it a year round project… then I took the plunge and created two Springtime pieces featuring ’Pumpkin Lass’ and ‘Pumpkin Lad’!

Folks seemed to like them! So I took that as acceptance to continue the comic throughout the year!
And finally, I got the time to finish my animated comic, showcasing Pumpkin Lass and Pumpkin Lad attending a school dance together!
This project is currently ongoing and I regularly upload the comics to my social media pages. The aim is to create enough comics so I can upload them as a weekly series on a graphic novel sharing platform.
